Founded in 1997 by American entrepreneurs Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, Netflix, Inc. is a media corporation with its headquarters located in Los Gatos, California. Since its founding, the company has been pushing the boundaries of content delivery. Initially upending the Blockbuster video-rental business model, Netflix went on to challenge cable and video streaming businesses, content publishers, and, starting in 2023, broadcasters.

When Netflix first started off in 1997, it was a pay-per-rent DVD rental service. Subscribers could choose from tens of thousands of movies and TV series on the website, and the discs would be mailed to them. Netflix launched its online subscription service in 1999, and by 2000, it was offering unlimited rentals at a fixed price without any shipping or late fees.


Using an algorithm to forecast a person's movie interests based on past rental data, the business unveiled a personalized movie recommendation system in 2000. This algorithm was enhanced in response to the 2006 Netflix Prize contest, which asked 40,000 participants to increase the percentage of recommended movies that were accurate by 10%. BellKor's received the $1 million Netflix Prize in 2009.to BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos, a group of seven engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians from Israel, Canada, the United States, and Austria.
